Encounters in the Wild: Leslie, the Old Wild Horse of the Owyhee

Author: Denis Pijetlovic (Germany) | Trail-Name: Rooster

On my thru-hike (May-July 2024) along the Oregon Desert Trail (ODT) in the Owyhee Canyonlands, I experienced many unforgettable moments. But one encounter stood out and deeply touched me: meeting an old wild horse that I named Leslie, inspired by the nearby and impressive Leslie Gulch mountains.

An Unexpected Companion

On the 41st day of my hike on the Oregon Desert Trail, as I was walking through the picturesque Let'er Rip Canyon near the Honeycomb WSA and heading towards the summit of Craig Gulch, I came across an old horse. Leslie, clearly separated from its herd due to its weakness and slowness, was following its own path. In this secluded area, far from civilization, we were the only witnesses to this moment. We walked at a respectful distance from each other, a silent communication amidst the rugged wilderness.

Together on the Path

For about half a mile, we accompanied each other, with Leslie choosing a faintly trodden path along the canyon. It was a time of silent agreement until Leslie finally took the opportunity to disappear up a slope.

Moments of Silent Understanding

Although we never walked side by side, our encounter was marked by curiosity and cautious respect. It felt as if we both recognized and accepted each other's presence, acknowledging that we were connected in our own way at that moment.

The Meaning of Solitude

This encounter was another lesson about solitude. In the isolation of the Owyhee Canyonlands, I often felt alone, but this meeting reminded me of how deep a connection can be, even when it is unexpected and fleeting.

The Message of the Wilderness

Leslie, the old horse spending its last days away from its herd, became a symbol for me of the raw and unvarnished reality of life in the wilderness. This meeting once again showed me that every life eventually comes to an end and that we must face this final phase alone. Nature is both cruel and beautiful, and every creature has its own, often challenging path to follow.

My encounter with Leslie was a lesson in acceptance, resilience, and the unexpected paths life can take. It was a moment that captured the essence of what it means to be and survive in the wilderness.

I thank the Friends of the Owyhee for giving me a platform to share this experience. For everyone exploring the Oregon Desert Trail, I hope you also experience moments that shape and inspire you, just as my time with Leslie, the old wild horse, did for me.
